Safety, Packing and Travel Tips

Safety Tips

Visiting South Africa is safe as long as you understand the context of our country.

South Africa has a 40% unemployment rate so people steal things they can sell for quick cash to put food on the table.

DO

  • If your things are getting stolen, get yourself away from the scene then report it
  • If you feel someone's behaviour is suspect, get to the nearest busy place you can find like a restaurant.
  • We recommend taking out a small insurance on cell phones, laptops and jewelry

DON'T

  • Don't let anyone except bank staff assist when you withdraw cash
  • Don't leave cell phones, wallet or bags unnattended
  • Don't go walking unless you see other people like you also walking there. Don't walk at night except in shopping malls
  • Don't allow your credit card out of sight, rather go watch the transaction take place
  • Don't pack valuable jewelry in your check-in luggage - rather keep  it in your carry on luggage
  • Don't tempt cleaning staff with cellphones, jewelry and wallets in the hotel room rather put them in the safe
  • Don't rent high profile cars like top range Mercedes or good spare parts cars that are high theft risk car. Ask the car dealership for advice.
  • Don't leave your drink unattended at a bar. Finish it or take it with you

“The hood (township) made me realise that crime succeeds because crime does the one thing the government doesn’t do: crime cares. Crime is grassroots. Crime looks for the young kids who need support and a lifting hand. Crime offers internship programmes and part-time jobs and opportunities for advancement. Crime gets involved in the community. Crime doesn’t discriminate.”

From the biography Born a Crime about growing up in South Africa under Apartheid

Trevor NoahTrevor Noah is a world renowned South African born comedian, political commentator and television host. He is the current host for the Daily Show in America and has won the Prime Time Emmy award once and been nominated 6 times.

However, rather have a range of clothing for different weather and some essential items so you can be comfortable during your stay.

  • Camera with good zoom
  • Hat and suncreen

  • Hot weather layers
  • Cold weather layers
  • Windbreaker jacket
