Tour Details

Please note this tour is only available Wednesday to Sunday excluding public holidays due to museum hours.

Apartheid means separateness. It was a past political system in which South African society had different bills of rights according to racial ethnicity. During the Apartheid era, many countries refused to trade with South Africa until such a racial system was declined by the National Constitution. The Apartheid system officially ended in 1994 giving rise to the first democratic election which gave all South Africans the right to vote.

“No one is born hating another person because of the colour of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.” – Nelson Mandela

The Mandela and Apartheid Museum tour will get in you in touch with Mandela’s history against this prior anti-democratic political system. The content is valuable to broaden anyone’s socio-political worldview and provide perspective on humanitarian issues that apply beyond the South African context.

Later on in the tour, you will be taken to a restaurant situated at one of our cosmopolitan hubs for some delicious cuisine.

Going to Soweto was a culturally enlightening experience for me. The story of apartheid spoke very deeply to me, as it was parallel to the Holocaust, being of Jewish heritage myself. The story was sad but it’s beautiful to see how it has brought the people of South Africa together, and it was at counterpoint to the beautiful street art, crafts, music and food being created by its people. I had a really lovely time and Janine was thoughtful, accommodating and knowledgeable host and guide through it all.

It is such a great adventure and educational about the South African Tribes in their native dress and the various ways they live. A Zulu guide greeted us at the entrance, then walked us through the villages represented by the Zulu, Xhosa, Pedi, Besotho and Ndeble tribes. We ate the various foods customarily cooked in traditional styles. Good eats! Also, sampled a dried protein offered in a large bowel. I won’t say as to what it was, not to give away the surprise, but I followed the old saying, ‘ When in Africa….” I am glad I did. We ended with a show of very energetic dancers accompanied by various drums. Fantastic!
