One Day Tours

Apartheid, Soweto and Mandela House Tour

Apartheid, meaning separateness, was a political system of racial discrimination that finally ended in South Africa in 1994 with the election of Nelson Mandela in the country’s first free and democratic election.

In his own words Mandela said, “No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.”

Who was Mandela? Where did he grow up? What was life like during Apartheid?

Discover the answers to these questions on a deeply personal, sometimes heart warming, sometimes macabre journey through South Africa’s history from the early 1900’s when the seeds of this dark ideology were sown with powerful photographic and audiovisual content that can only improve our humanity and inspire us towards Human Rights for all.

Visit the actual places where key turning points happened in Soweto (which stands for South Western Township and was the largest township formed by the forced removals during Apartheid.)

Visit Mandela’s house for an even more personal view of his life as well as the only street in the world where two Nobel Peace Prize winners have lived.

Meet the real “Kasi” (township) entrepreneurs as you are guided through Soweto by a sowetan who will help you to experience a day in the life of a local including everything from taking public transport on a famous South African Taxi, to meeting local families and learning some of the lingo (a mixture of all 11 official languages in South Africa).

A delicious traditional South African lunch is included.
