The City of Gold

Johannesburg holds many opportunities for South Africans and Africans and is considered the “New York of Africa” – “the concrete jungle where dreams are made” to quote a popular song from Jay Z. It got named city of Gold “Egoli” (Place of Gold a Sotho name for Johannesburg) due to the mining of gold that started it all in 1886. Johannesburg also has the deepest gold mine in the world on its western edge – the Mponeng Mine which is 3,84km deep.

Johannesburg is the largest city in South Africa with a population of four and a half million people recorded in 2011 but with an estimated eight million people if you include the urban areas on the outskirts of the city.  With its vast businesses creating an economic growth of an average of 2% in the past ten years its no wonder it is the wealthiest city. 

Johannesburg is not a thing, its an experience.

Interesting Things to Do In Johannesburg

  1. Visit Mandela’s house in Soweto: Mandela is most famous for winning the Nobel Peace prize with F.W. de Klerk for bringing an end to apartheid (meaning Separateness in Afrikaans) where rights were determined by your race group.
  2. Visit the Apartheid Museum: This museum is fascinating and personal. Get a sense of the day to day life experiences of different ethnic groups. It will shock, amuse and make you a better human being
  3. Try some delicious “Kasi” (township food): like Idombolo and beef, (traditional dumplings with stew), Pap (maize ground fine and cooked to perfection), Chakalaka (traditional spicy sauce), Kota (streetfood), Magwena (deepfried dough snack) and other delicious “Kasi” (township food)
  4. Visit Credo Mutwa Cultural Village: This is the incredible private collection of sculptures and art created by the Sangoma (traditional African healer) Credo Mutwa who also predicted many international events from visions he was sent including the 9/11 Twin Towers and even the Soweto uprising. Although in a state of disrepair, it is amazing to see this tribute to his life’s mission to demonstrate the glory of Africa as the true birthplace of humanity.
  5. Visit Gold Reef City Theme Park: This is a great outing for all ages. There are several roller-coasters that range from 10 out  of 10 fear factor to 5 out of 10 fear factor. There are also restaurants, period themed souvenir shops and a Casino next door. 
  6. Maboneng Precinct: This is in the city centre of Johannesburg and is the best place to be on a Sunday afternoon. Find trendy restaurants, dance bars, art and fashion and a great vibe. Sip a cocktail and enjoy the culture. Some of our favourites include 
    1. Arts on Main – it has a canteen rooftop that hosts a mix of Cuban Salsa, Kizomba, and Semba dance sessions afternoon.  A tour of arts galleries and vintage clothing stores.
    2. Rooftop BBQ – A nice way to see the Sunset as you sip their luscious cocktails best enjoyed with mouth watering platters to order from and a wonderful nightlife entertainment.
    3. Main Street – Oooh snap don’t forget to smile for the camera, young individual photographers at every end of the streets randomly take pictures so you feel like you are walking on the runway
    4. The Food Market with local, Ethiopian, Indian and Chineses flavours to feed your taste buds
    5. The Bioscope The Bioscope include talks, live performances, and film festivals
  7. Rosebank Arts and Crafts Market: This is a conglomeration of african arts and crafts where you will find ostrich eggs, wood carvings, scuplures, belts, jewellery, fabrics, paintings and anything African. There are a few coffee shops close to the market. The market is underground Mon – Sat and moves to the car park Sunday 9am to 4pm
  8. 2010 World Cup Stadium:  “Soccer City” as its been nicknamed, will get you into the soccer vibe so you can almost hear the vuvuzelas (locally invented noise maker) roaring.  Specially designed to look like a native pot in fire it was also nicknamed “Calabash” and listed as one of the most beautiful soccer stadia in the world. It is the largest Stadium in South Africa with a seating capacity of over 94 700. Even with your two left feet you would wish to play on the field and score a goal or two.

  9. Monte Casino: In the mood for dinner and a show? This is the perfect all in one destination. From the outside, it looks like an Italian castle because it was designed to resemble an ancient Tuscan village. There are more than forty restaurants, cafes and fast-food, arcade, ten-pin bowling, comedy shows, a fifteen screen cinema and two top class theatres; the huge Teatro, which is the venue for major international productions such as Broadway musicals and the smaller Pieter Toerien Theatre which stages South African drama and comedy productions. Dinner or coffee in the outdoor square is particularly enjoyable in the summer months.

  10. Malls, Fine Wine and Dining: Johannesburg hosts some massive malls which is where most South Africans go for entertainment. Top malls that stand out are Mall of Africa (the largest mall in Africa) and Sandton (where all the top luxury brands can be found and the most expensive real estate in Johannesburg). Its also a good idea to visit Melrose Arch, Rosebank and Hyde Park for a modern city feel.
