Coming to South Africa there is so much to see and do that you would be forgiven if you forgot to add “food adventure” to your bucket list.
Here are our favourite “homegrown” “proudly South African dishes you should try during your visit to South Africa
- Boerewors – (farmers beef sausage with herbs) or steak on the braai (the best barbeque style ever invented)
- Bobotie – sweetish mince with a delicious tangy yoghurt coating served with yellow aromatic rice
- Bunny Chow – a loaf of bread hollowed out and served with saucy spicy curry inside
- Pap (finely ground maize meal cooked into a porridge and relish sauce with potjiekos – a stew of meat and/or vegetables cooked in a three-legged black pot on an open fire
- Tamatie Bredie – a delicious tomato-based stew with carrots and potatoes
- Ostrich Stew or ostrich burger – a bird that provides red meat
- Biltong – Dried beef or game meat that is a south African delicacy
- Amarula chocolates or mouse or alcohol – made from the sweet Amarula tree
- Milk Tart – It has the texture of cheesecake but a very mild taste more like cinnamon and hot milk
- Koek sister – “twisted sisters” These are made from sweet dough which is then soaked in syrup. To die for!

Finally Tea. We have rooibos – the true rooibos (redbush) comes from one place in the whole world – Clan William in the Cape. So do try a cup of this caffeine free reddish herbal tea that is full of anti-oxidants and is a South African staple in any household.
