Hello and welcome to See My Country Safaris Blog!
Creating this company has been an adventure that can be likened to any travel adventure.
First we had the idea, we got excited, we spoke to our friends and family and we decided to start researching and put something together.
Then we went on our first tour and it was great – ok not entirely great; we underestimated the fees and petrol costs, got super hungry as we thought we would be back before lunch and only returned at 4 pm – much later than expected. However, we had done it! We had found beautiful wild animals and our guests had great photographs. Remembering this got me thinking about what Travel has taught me.
5 Valuable Lessons I Learned from Travel:
- Don’t stress about the small stuff: Life is not about perfection but about taking action rather than being stuck in doing nothing for fear of getting some things wrong. As you go you can improve and the knowledge from learning will make you more confident and able next time.
- Enjoy the moment and take time to really be where you are: In my previous life I was always rushing from one thing to the next and I lost my joy and purpose. I decided to make a point every day to take some moments to look at the flowers, play with my pets, hug my family and just be grateful for a hot cup of tea, or my favourite song.
- Let the journey be what it is and not an idea of what it should be: So often I visit a place in the world and when I get there, realise I had a preconceived idea of what it would be like. Even this company had many surprising twists and turns along the way. One of my colleagues in founding this business had to urgently return overseas due to ill health. Corona Virus hit as our business had just expanded. However, I realise that even the “unpleasant surprises” have their value in creating an appreciation for what we have.
- Sometimes the journey is more important than the destination: Travel has given me is the ability to problem solve and think on my feet. I have gotten lost, not understood the language, taken the wrong train, missed planes and made planning errors grossly underestimating times and distances. After the initial panic moment, my mind has gotten used to assessing the situation for danger, handling any danger, working out alternatives and overcoming the problem.
- Perspective and finding my humanity: My favourite thing about travel is the ability to experience a paradigm shift. It’s a free ticket to borrow someone else’s world for a few days. As I have gotten to understand the history, the cultures, food, and natural surroundings; I realise we are all one team as humanity facing similar challenges across the globe and that even all of life is one team trying to co-exist on this planet. It always gives me perspective on what is truly important in my life and also the power we have to change the fate of species through our daily actions determined by our viewpoints.
